CLEANING AND INSPECTING NOTE: Whenever part is worn excessively, cracked, or damaged in any way, replacement is necessary
the brass commutator end of the armature for any burned spots or damageIf the commutator is lightly burned or damaged, the
armature must be replacedThis is molded commutator and turning it down in lathe should not be attempted 10Remove the nut
from the positive postAccount for the lock washer, flat washer, fiber washer, and an O-ring ! CAUTION Do not use emery cloth
to clean the commutator as emery particles will become imbedded in the brass commutator resulting in short circuitUse only
#200 grit sandpaper 11Remove the positive brush assembly from the starter housing 8Inspect the commutator end of the armature
for buildup in the groovesCarefully remove any buildup by undercutting using thinly ground hacksaw bladeDo not undercut any
deeper than the original groove which can be seen by looking at the end of the commutator9Using caliper, measure the undercutMaximum
